The professional career of dr Robben started in 1988 when he graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University. The following year, he completed an Additional Doctoral Examination at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. After a brief period working as a locum veterinarian in the Netherlands from 1989 to 1990, Dr Robben pursued specialized training in Internal Medicine of Companion Animals at Utrecht University. In 1997 he became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – Companion Animals (ECVIM-CA).In 1994, after completing his specialization training, Dr Robben joined the faculty at the Department of Clinical Sciences at Utrecht University, known then as “Vakgroep Geneeskunde van Gezelschapsdieren.” That same year, he was appointed head of the Intensive Care Unit for Companion Animals. His whole career he has been involved in the development of emergency and intensive care medicine for dogs and cats. Dr Robben’s academic accomplishments continued with the completion of his doctoral thesis in 2004 on the topic “Insulinoma in dogs: diagnostic aspects and functional characteristics.” His commitment to advancing veterinary emergency and intensive care medicine took him to the University of California, Davis, in 2008, where he served as a staff member at the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit for a year.In 2012, Dr Robben was appointed Associate Professor in Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine of Companion Animals at Utrecht University. He played an important role in the reorganization of the faculty, becoming chairman of the newly formed Section of Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine for Companion Animals in 2020.Beyond his academic and clinical roles, Dr Robben has been influential in professional veterinary organizations. From 2008 to 2012, he served as chairman of the European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. His expertise and dedication in the field were further recognized when he became one of the founding members of the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC®), where he served as chairman from 2018 to 2021. Additionally, Dr Robben has been an active board member of the European Board of Veterinary Specialization (EBVS®) on behalf of the ECVECC® from 2012 until 2024.
