Hilde de Rooster graduated as a veterinary surgeon at Ghent University, Belgium, in 1993. She left for Scotland, where after a year she obtained a Master in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. After her return, she worked for 8 years in a small anomal veterinary clinic in Berchem, Belgium, where she practised primary veterinary medicine, orthopaedics and surgery while completing her PhD (2001). Since 2003, she has been taking care of referral patients in the Small Animal teaching Hospital of the Faculty of veterinary Medicine of Ghent University. Five years later, she successfully passed the European surgery specialist exam, allowing her to use the title of specialist (Dipl ECVS). Her current duties include chairing the Small Animal Department, and providing theoretical and practical training of students, interns and residents in soft-tissue surgery. Operating is still her passion. In addition, she supervises several PhD students on surgery-related topics and is very active in translational cancer research.
