Dr. Anastasia Komnenou is Prof. of Surgery-Comparative Ophthalmology-Exotic and Wildlife Medicine, at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AUTH. She has been Head of “Ophthalmology Unit” from 2000 till now and the “Exotic and Wildlife Unit” establishing the Departments within the Vet School. She specializes in Clinical and Comparative Ophthalmology of small, large and exotic animals as well as Exotic and Wildlife Medicine. Her research interests and activities include “Ocular Surface Disease and Dry eye, “ Cornea Wound Healing”, “Uveitis”, “Exotic and Wildlife Ophthalmology”, as well as Wildlife Health and Conservation. She has been trained in Universities and Specialized Centers (e.g School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A., University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, School of Veterinary Medicine Toulouse France, Seal Rehabilitation and Research Center-Netherlands, Marine Mammal Center- California, USA, etc.).
She is offering medical advice and consultation to many Charities and NGO’s in all regions of Greece and neighboring countries. Also, she assists with zoological and wildlife ophthalmology cases, as well as wildlife health and welfare issues, collaborating with Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centers, National Ministries and Port Police Authorities. She is “National Focal Point on Wildlife” of “OIE- World Organization for Animal Health”, Head of the Scientific Committee of the “Hellenic National Marine Mammal Stranding Network” and SC licensing of “Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers Licencing Committe”, Member of the Hellenic Scientific Committee of CITES, Co-founder, Chair and Chief Veterinarian of “ARION-Cetacean, Rescue & Rehabilitation Research Center” and East Mediterranean Regional Representative and Focal Point” in the “ACCOBAMS-Agreement of 22 Mediterranean, Black Sea and Atlantic Region Countries for the protection of Cetaceans”. She has got many awards for these activities. She has authored published more than 100 scientific papers in the topic and 250 conference abstracts. She is member of many Hellenic and International Scientific Societies.
